DELPHOS — The Van Wert Lady Cougars had four players in double figures as they outlasted a feisty Delphos Jefferson team 70-61 in non-conference girls’ basketball action on Saturday.

Alexis Dowdy led the Cougars with 19 points, while Riley Jones and Erin Morrow each had 12 points and Cheyenne Handy added 11 for Van Wert. The Lady Wildcats were led by Rileigh Stockwell’s game-high 26 points, while Katie Goergens added 13 points for Jefferson.
The Cougars outscored Delphos 18-13 in both of the first two quarters to lead by 10 points, 36-26, at the half. The Wildcats rallied, going on a 21-16 run in the third quarter to cut Van Wert’s lead to five points, 52-47, at the end of that stanza.
The Cougars kept their composure, though, and got an easier win at the end than the final score would indicate.
With the win, Van Wert goes to 7-2 overall, while the Lady Wildcats fall to 2-6 overall.
That junior varsity contest went to Jefferson, behind Jessica Pimpas’ 21 points. Cassidy Sinning was the Cougar JVs’ leading scorer with 10 points. The Wildcat JVs are now 3-5, while Van Wert falls to 2-7 on the year.
The Lady Cougars’ next game will be at Fort Recovery on Saturday, January 4, 2014, with a 2:30 p.m. start time.
