Cougar girls get win over Lincolnview

The Van Wert Lady Cougars started slow, but got their offense going in the second quarter to handle the Lincolnview girls 54-38 in a non-conference basketball game played on Saturday.

Erin Morrow scored 17 points and Alexis Dowdy added 11 more to lead the Cougars, who are now 10-2 on the year. Lincolnview is 4-8 overall. Lincolnview was led by Julia Thatcher’s 14 points, while Ashton Bowersock added 11 points.

The teams were tied at 9 apiece at the end of the first quarter, but Van Wert outscored the Lancers 17-7 in the second period to go up by 10, 26-16, at the half.

The Cougars extended their lead to 13 with a 9-6 run in the third quarter and outscored Lincolnview 19-16 in the final period to get the win.

Van Wert shot well from the field, knocking down 19 of 36 field goal attempts (52 percent) – including 5 of 11 from three-point range — but the Lady Cougars only hit half of their free throws (11 of 22). The Lancers were 13 of 41 from the field (31 percent), but made 10 of 14 free throw attempts (71 percent).

Van Wert dominated the boards, bringing down 32 rebounds, versus 19 for the Lancers, while Lincolnview had fewer turnovers (13-18) than the Cougars.

The Van Wert junior varsity team was also victorious by a score of 22-16 to take their record to 5-8 on the year.
