CELINA — The Cougar swim team traveled to Celina for the annual Wapakoneta/Celina invitational involving 18 teams, including eight Western Buckeye League schools. The boys took fifth place, while the girls finished 10th. Celina took first place for the boys and Ottawa-Glandorf was the girls’ champion, with Lima Shawnee taking runner-up for the boys and Wapak taking runner-up in the girls’ events.
Other schools participating (in order of finish in the boys’ standings) included Van Wert, Ada, Lima Bath, St. Marys, Minster, Kenton, Lima Central Catholic, Coldwater, Bellefontaine, Fort Recovery, New Bremen, Benjamin Logan, Marion Local and Elida.
Highlights of the boys’ day included Eric Easley in the 100-yard breaststroke earning a first place and leading the race by almost three seconds; Easley also scored fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle. Also scoring for the Cougars were Sam Easley in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, Kory Schlatter in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, Adam Jurczyk in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, Josh Overholt in the 50-yard freestyle, Jacob Scheidt in the 50-yard and 500-yard freestyle, Tyler Rex in the 50-yard freestyle, Dan Silette in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, and Cade Fleming in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.
The girls had a solid and balanced day, scoring in all but two events. Scoring for the Cougars were Karlyn Koontz in the 200-yardindividual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, Hannah Stemen in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yared backstroke, Andi Foster in the 500-yard freestyle, and Bethany Fast in the 100-yard breaststroke.
All six boys’ relay teams scored. The best finishes were fifth place by the 200-yard medley (Eric Ealey, Josh Overholt, Sam Easley, Jacob Scheidt), and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (Sam Easley, Adam Jurczyk, Jacob Scheidt, Eric Easley) teams. The 200-yard freestyle “A” relay (Adam Jurczyk, Tyler Rex, Josh Overholt, Dan Silette), earned seventh place. The 400-yard “B” relay team took 11th with the “B” 200-yard freestyle relay taking 16th and the 200-yard medley relay teams scored, taking 13th.
All three girls “A” relay teams scored. The best finish was recorded by the 400-yard freestyle with Holly Hammond, Katie Trittschuh, Andi Foster, and Hannah Stemen taking ninth place. The 200-yard freestyle relay, with Bethany Fast, Peyton Fleming, Landrie Koontz, and Andi Foster, claimed 14th place. The 200-yard medley relay team took 13th place; members were Hannah Stemen, Bethany Fast, Karlyn Koontz, and Holly Hammond. Additionally, the girls 400-yard “B” relay (Landrie Koontz, Haley Richardson, Mackenzie Agler, Karlyn Koontz) scored with a 12th place finish.
The next meet for the Cougars will be a dual meet at Ayersville High School on January 14.
