Cougar girls down Celina in WBL contest

The Van Wert Lady Cougars hosted Celina on Thursday and came away with a 61-42 victory over the Lady Bulldogs in Western Buckeye League girls’ basketball action.
Van Wert (14-4, 5-2 in the WBL) was led by Alexis Dowdy and Erin Morrow, who both scored 14 points in the contest. Emlie Moonshower added 9 points for the Cougars, all coming on three-pointers.
Heather Helby led the way for Celina (2-15) with 13 points.
The Lady Cougars took a big lead in the first quarter, going up by 12 points, 17-5, at the end of a period. Van Wert outscored the Lady Bulldogs 11-6 in the second quarter to take a 17-point lead, 28-11, into the locker room at halftime.
Celina outscored the Cougars 19-17 in the third quarter to take a basket off that lead and trail by 15, 45-30, at the three-quarter mark, but Van Wert made its shots down the stretch, outscoring the Lady ‘Dogs 16-12 in the final stanza for the victory.
The Cougars shot well from the field in the first half, but went cold in the second half, finishing with 16 of 46 (34.8 percent) for the game. Van Wert countered that, though, by hitting 23 of 34 free-throw attempts (67.6 percent), including 11 of 15 in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs were 8 of 16 from the line (50 percent).
The Lady Cougars also won the rebounding battle, 30-23.
The Van Wert junior varsity team also won, 43-40, to go to 8-10 on the year, and 3-4 in the WBL.
