Ottoville, Kalida advance at VW sectionals

Putnam County schools Kalida and Ottoville were winners in Division IV girls’ sectional tournament basketball games played at Van Wert on Wednesday.

In the first game, Ottoville had little trouble with Fort Jennings, downing the Musketeers 55-22 to advance to the sectional tournament finals.

The Big Green had an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-3, and was up by 18 points, 24-6, at the half.

The rout continued in the second half, as Ottoville outscored the Lady Musketeers 31-16 to cruise home to victory.

Lexie Wannemacher led the Big Green with 14 points, while Lyndsey Wannemacher and Taylor Mangas added 9 points and Brooke Mangas scored 8 points for Ottoville. Cassie Lindeman was the only Fort Jennings player in double figures, with 10 points on the night.

The second game was closer, as Kalida defeated Delphos Jefferson to earn its way to the sectional finals.

The Lady Wildcats took an 18-12 lead in the first quarter and increased it to 10 points, 31-21, at the half. It was 42-33 at the three-quarter mark.

Jacquelyn Gardner led Kalida with 18 points, while Allison Recker added 14 points for the Wildcats. Jefferson had three players in double figures, led by Katie Goergens’ 17 points. Rileigh Stockwell added 14 points, while Brooke Culp scored 10 points for the Jeffcats.

Ottoville (9-8), the No. 2 seed in the tourney behind Crestview, will now play Kalida (8-11) for the lower-tier sectional title in the second game on Saturday, February 22.
