VWHS cheerleaders receive recognition
VWHS cheerleading information
The Van Wert High School cheerleaders were honored at an awards program held in the VWHS commons immediately following their state competition on March 16. The squad traveled to Bowling Green State University early Sunday morning to compete in the OASSA State Cheerleading and Dance competition, where they ranked 18th in the state in the Division II Non-Mount category.
Senior Grace Hammons was honored with a senior clock for her service to the varsity and junior varsity cheer squads. She was also presented with a scrapbook made by her fellow cheerleaders to capture the memories of her 2013-2014 season.
Six cheerleaders were awarded with their varsity letters. The third-year letter winner was senior Grace Hammons. Second-year varsity letter winners included juniors Lauren Eikenbary and Liz Keirns. First-year letter winners included junior Maekenzie Alba, sophomore Katelyn Welch and freshman Hannah Mengerink.Tiffany Ricketts was presented a Varsity letter for participating as the Winter Sports Mascot.
Special awards were given as well, with “Most Valuable” going to Grace Hammons, “Most Spirited” to Liz Keirns and “Most Improved” to Madeline Rogers. Katelyn Welch received the Coach’s Award.
Coach Bell commended the cheerleaders for their hard work and “Cougar pride” that took them all the way to the state competition.
