Cougar tennis team blanks Wapakoneta

WAPAKONETA — The Van Wert Cougar boys’ tennis team used strong play overall to Wapakoneta 5-0 in a Western Buckeye League match held in Wapakoneta on Tuesday.

None of the Cougar singles players had any trouble with their Wapak opponents. No. 1 singles player Lane Mansfield downed Drew Wayman 6-1, 6-0, while Van Wert’s Erik Yeung defeated Andrew Gibson at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Cougar Brandon Amstutz won over Alex Stinebaugh 6-0, 6-1.

The only real challenge for Van Wert came at No. 1 doubles, when Cougars Eli Alvarez and Nick Etter outlasted Joe Pitts and Jordan Doss 6-2, 6-4. Van Wert’s No. 2 doubles team of Kory Schlatter and Gabe Rollins downed Redskins Seth Bowers and Marcos Campos 6-1, 6-1.
