Lincolnview downs Antwerp in baseball

ANTWERP — The Lincolnview Lancers finally generated some offense as they won, 7-3, over the Antwerp Archers in a non-league contest played Friday at Antwerp.

The Lancers started out slow, trailing 2-1 until the fourth inning. There, keyed by a three-run single by Tyler Richey, Lincolnview scored five runs in the inning and took a 6-2 lead they never relinquished.

The Archers got another run in the sixth inning to make it 6-3, but Lincolnview added a final run in the seventh to cement the win.

Offensively, in addition to Richey, Dalton Schmersal was 2-for-4 in the game, with two RBI singles, while Kyle Williams and Derek Friesner each had RBI doubles in the game.

Lincolnview Coach Kevin Longstreth said it was a good win for the Lancers.

“After we got through the first, we settled down both defensively and offensively,” Coach Longstreth said. “Derek Youtsey got into a groove after the first and did a good job of challenging their hitters.

“Once he decided to do that, his confidence built with the good play of the defense,” the Lincolnview coach added.

Longstreth said he was glad to see a better offensive outing from his Lancers. “We were able to string some solid hits together in the fourth and take the lead,” the coach said. “It was good to see Williams, McCleery, and Dalton Schmersal all have multiple hits and, hopefully, they can continue.”

While Longstreth said his team still needs to improve at the plate, he hopes a solid win like Friday’s will kick-start the Lancers offensively.
