Dolores M. Krol, 89, of Van Wert, died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

She was born May 16, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of the late John and Cecelia (Bucholtz) Matres. On October 1, 1949, she was united in marriage with Alfons A. Krol, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1999.

She is survived by four sons, John A. Krol of Van Wert, Charles J. Krol of American Canyon, California, Mathew W. Krol of Chicago, Illinois, and Christopher M. (Gina) Krol of Burlington, Vermont; eight grandchildren, Lisa M. (Ron) Shomaeker of Paulding, Jason A. (Niki) Krol of Decatur, Ind., Joshua J. Krol of Davis, California, Emily A. Krol, Adam A. Krol and Jeremy P. Krol, all of Burlington, Vermont, Paul Krol of Columbus and Christina Skinner of Davis, California; four great-grandchildren, Baily Krol of Van Wert, Shayla Shomaeker of Paulding, and Macy and Dodger Krol of Decatur. She was a sister-in-law to the late John Cardinal Krol.

A son, David A. Krol; one brother, Leonard Matres; and two sisters, Mary Matres and Genevieve Teodecki, also preceded her in death.

Dolores had a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition and was employed by J.L. Hudson in its Detroit store, first in Dietary Services and as mezzanine restaurant manager from 1947-49. She then served as director of patient nutritional planning at Garfield Heights Hospital from 1949-50.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert and a member of the Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia.  She was a former member of the Pastoral Council and had belonged to the former St. Mary’s Dinner and Bridge Group. She also sang in the church choir. Dolores had also been active in the Welcome Wagon, Meals on Wheels, the Van Wert Woman’s Club, was active in a bowling league, was a St. Mary’s School lunch assistant and a ember of Van Wert County Hospital’s Twig II group for 46 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Stan Szybka officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

Calling hours are from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where a parish rosary will be recited at 6 that evening.
