Cougars compete at area golf tourney

The Van Wert varsity golf team opened its season at Sycamore Springs Golf Course to compete in a 12-team invitational hosted by Liberty Benton High School.
The Cougar squad, lean on experience — with three of five golfers playing their first varsity golf match — struggled to a team score of 390, finishing 11th out of 12 teams. Lima Central Catholic won the event with a score of 323.
Freshman Jared Hernandez was Van Wert’s medalist with an 18-hole score of 83. Other Cougar golf scores are as follows: Brandon Hernandez, 94; Daniel McGowan, 105; Jacob Covey, 108; and Gabe Rollins, 128.
The Cougars will next play Thursday in a dual match at Bryan High School.
