“The Symphony of My Heart,” art postcards by Iowa artist Saffron Goetschius is over a staggering 500 cards categorized as mail art. Mail art (also known as Postal art and Correspondence art) is an artistic movement centered around sending small scale works through the postal service.  It initially developed out of the Fluxus movement in the 1950s and 60s and has since developed into a global movement that continues to the present. American artist Ray Johnson is considered to be the first mail artist, and the New York Correspondence School that he developed is considered the first network of mail artists.

Mail Art covers a wide variety of mediums and methods, but includes collages of mixed media placed on a post card, with instructions to the post office to hand cancel. and they are mailed as is. Each postcard was sent through the mail to my mailbox. These cards of communication will hang from the trusses in the Wendel Gallery, signifying fragile balance of life and relationship. You will laugh, you will want to cry. The Exhibit will open Saturday Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. with an opening reception and run through Sept. 28. During the last week of the show, Saffron encourages visitors to cut down a postcard they find meaningful and take it home.
