Cougar golfers edged by St. Marys

Van Wert boys’ golf information

Despite getting off to a good start with the Hernandez brothers, the Van Wert golf team was edged by St. Marys 174-178 during a Western Buckeye League match held Thursday at Willow Bend Country Club.

Jared Hernandez had a four-over-par 39 to take match medalist honors for Van Wert, while brother Brandon Hernandez carded a 40 to tie Roughrider golf standout Carter Bowman. Other scores for the Cougars are as follows: Daniel MaGowan, 49; Gabe Rollins, 50; Jacob Covey, 52; and Carter Eikenbary, 57.

Other scores for St. Marys are as follows: Colin Burke, 44; Jacob Hollman and Jill Schmitmeyer, 45; Austin Cook, 50; and Sean Heindz, 55.

The Cougars are now 1-3 in true WBL, while St. Marys moves to 3-0 in league play.

Van Wert will next travel to Defiance on Saturday to play in an invitational there, and will have its next home match next Tuesday against Elida, starting at 4:30 p.m.
