Paul Eugene ‘Sonny’ Martz

Paul Eugene “Sonny” Martz, 84, of Van Wert, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at his residence.

He was born July 12, 1930, in Latty, the son of the late Paul Lester and Princess Irene (Rogers) Martz. On April 29, 1961, he was united in marriage with Evelyn Beth (Burnett) Martz, who survives.

American Flag for obituaries 6-2011Other survivors include four children, Gary (Marci) Martz of Van Wert, Stephen (Kyong) Martz of San Antonio, Texas, Paula Jo (Ronald D.) Kline of Van Wert, and David (Becky) Martz of Middle Point; 11 grandchildren, Keith Martz, Michelle Young, Robert Martz, Jennifer Martz, Angela Martz, Brandon Bartz, Kristy Grindell, David Himburg II, Lance Dasher, Danielle Dasher, and Elijah Paul Martz; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and one brother, Jerry L. (Jackie) Martz of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

A half-brother, Harold Dean Martz, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Martz had been employed at both the former Continental Can Company and Sonoco Company and retired as a foreman from Sonoco. He was a member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert, having been a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1320 in Van Wert and a graduate of Van Wert High School. He was both an avid fisherman and card player.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 1, at Salem Presbyterian Church in Venedocia, with the Rev. Thomas Emery officiating. Private family burial will follow at a later date in Venedocia Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, November 30, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert.
