VW swimmers compete in holiday invite

LIMA — The Van Wert Cougar swim team traveled to Lima for the annual holiday invitational involving 17 teams, including eight Western Buckeye League schools. The Van Wert boys took fifth place, while the girls finished 13.

Lima Shawnee took first place in the boys’ competition, with Versailles winning the girls’ event. Ottawa-Glandorf earned runner-up status for both the girls’ and boys’ teams. Other schools participating (in order of finish in the boys’ standings) included Celina, Ada, Van Wert, Minster, Lima Central Catholic, Versailles, New Bremen, Lima Bath, Lima Senior, Kenton, Elida, Coldwater, Fort Recovery, St. Marys, and Marion Local.

Highlights of the boys’ day included Sam Easley scoring fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, while Tyler Rex also earned the Cougars a fourth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.

Also scoring for the Cougars were Tyler Rex netting a seventh place in the 200-yard individual medley, Kory Schlatter earning a 15th place in the 200-yard individual medley, Cade Fleming earning eighth place in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke, Hannah Stemen earning a seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle and Bethany Fast getting a 14th place in the 200-yard individual medley.

Four of the six “A” relay teams scored, while the best finishes were fourth place by both the boys’ 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. Members of the medley relay include Schlatter, Fleming, Easley, and Rex, with the 400-yard freestyle relay consisting of Easley, Nathan Ireland, Fleming, and Rex.

The Cougars rounded out the girls’ relays by earning a 12th place finish with the 400-yard freestyle relay of Peyton Fleming, Haley Richardson, Olivia Profit, Meagan Jacobs, with the 200-yard medley relay (Stemen, Peyton Fleming, Rebekah Fast, Mackenzie Agler) finishing in 14thplace.

Next for the Cougars will be a dual meet against Bryan High School at the Williams County Family YMCA on January 6.
