Knight girls still perfect with win over LCC

CONVOY — It was a tale of two halves at Ray Etzler Gymnasium: a mediocre one to start and a much better one to finish the game.

Crestview shot 13 three-point shots in the first half, making only two, but still managed to lead Lima Central Catholic by six points, 25-19. The Knight were up by just one point, 12-11, at the end of the first period.

In the second half, the Lady Knights shot just six threes in the second half, but were able to establish an inside game behind senior Lindsey Motycka and her game-high 23 points. The Lady Knights also looked to junior Emily Bauer, who scored all 14 of her points in the second half, while freshman Paige Motycka scored 11 points off the bench to spark Crestview’s 43-point second half effort.

The Knights left the best for last as they outscored LCC 29-10 in the final stanza to win going away, 68-42.

Kayla Verhoff led the T-Birds with 16 points, while Madison Stolly added 13 points for LCC.

Crestview was 24 of 41 from the field (58.5 percent), although the Lady Knights made just 4 of 15 from three-point range (26.7 percent). Crestview was golden at the free throw line, making 16 of 18 free-throw attempts (88.9 percent).

The Knights’ defense was in LCC’s face all night and it showed up in the Lady T-Birds shooting stats. LCC was 13 of 46 from the field (28.3 percent), while just 3 of 19 from three-point range (15.8 percent). The T-Birds were better from the charity stripe, canning 13 of 18 from the line (72.2 percent).

The Knights dominated the boards, bringing down 33 rebounds to 15 for LCC, although the T-Birds had fewer turnovers than Crestview (10-15).

The Lady Knights are now 11-0 on the season. Crestview will play this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the nationally heralded Classic in the Country showcase at Berlin Hiland High School. Crestview, currently ranked No. 4 in the Ohio Division IV poll, will play Ironton who is ranked No. 6 in Division III.

The junior varsity contest also went to Crestview, 45-29.
