McCoy: More cold weather, snow coming

DAVE MOSIER/independent editor

Winter is not going away just yet, with the current cold snap forecast to continue into mid-March, and more snow on the way.

Cold weather artwork 1-2014Van Wert County Emergency Management Director Rick McCoy said extreme cold temperatures and wind-chills will continue in the county for this week, and likely into March.

“The Climate Prediction Center actually has our temps well below normal through the middle of March, with precipitation above normal,” he said.

Today should see a high of only 7 above zero, with winds of 10 mph creating wind chills of minus 15 degrees. Tonight’s low will be 3 below zero, with up to 20 mph winds creating wind chills of 20 below zero.

Tuesday’s weather is likely to include more snow, McCoy said, with very windy conditions — including wind speeds gusting to 35 mph — to create blowing and drifting snow throughout the county. Highs on Tuesday will likely be around 20 degrees above zero, with a low of 11 Tuesday night, with wind chills of minus 15 degrees.

Wednesday’s high will be approximately 18 degrees, with more arctic air will blow into the county Wednesday night, causing temps to drop to minus 3 degrees, with wind chills of 15 below zero.

Thursday will another cold day, with a high predicted at 10 degrees, with a wind chill of minus 10, while the low on Thursday will be 5 below zero, with wind chills of minus 18 degrees.

Friday’s high will also be in the teens (13), with a low of minus 5 degrees, while Saturday will be the only the second day of the week with highs and lows both above zero (20 high, 13 low), while Sunday will bring a high of 30 and more snow to the area.

But, while this winter has been less harsh than last year so far, it appears as if cold temperatures and additional snow will remain in the forecast at least into the middle of March.

Time to get out a heat lamp and sunglasses and hit the (living room) beach?
