YMCA releases summer camp schedule

YMCA of VW County information

The YMCA of Van Wert County’s Summer Camp schedule is out and all youngsters ages 6-12 may register. While kids enjoy a great summer full of fun and activities, parents can enjoy the tax benefit of a childcare expense. There is a great list of weekly activities planned, including:

WEEK 1: June 8-12, Float My Boat Camp

This kid favorite is a sampler of local on-the-water activities.  Kids love being able to experience the different boats, and will come home with a solid foundation of boating skills and a newfound passion for boating.  These skills will be used on their outdoor adventure to the Auglaize River.

WEEK 2: June 15-19, Gamer Camp

This popular and interactive gaming camp will get the heart jumping as they compete in tournaments, dance-offs and share their expertise with 8 different gaming systems available.  The camp then moves to the water and outdoors each day as they enjoy some fun in the sun!

This camp is full of team building activities and initiative games designed to help groups develop confidence and leadership skills. During this camp, participants ascend the 35-foot climbing wall and conquer the zipline.

WEEK 4: June 29-July 3, The Great Outdoors

Ready to embark on an adventure in the great outdoors? Spend the week in nature exploring the art of hunting, fishing, archery and identification of animal and plant life right here in Camp Clay’s backyard.

WEEK 5: July 6-10, Survivor Camp

Be a Survivor! This camp introduces the campers to basic camping skills while connecting kids with the wonder of the world around them.  We do this through stories, hands-on skills like fire making, compass reading, shelter building, and hikes. These skills will be used to build their own onsite primitive campsite!

WEEK 6: July 13-17, Water Works 1

Jump into camp with a Splash! Each day the campers will be splashing the day away while visiting local pools and water parks!  This camp is designed for the campers to make great childhood memories while enjoying the summer air.

WEEK 7: July 20-July 24, Barnyard Animal Camp

This week the campers will have a WILD time as they visit local farms hosting a variety

of animals with the week ending with a trip to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

WEEK 8: July 27-31, Active X Sports Camp

Sports Galore! This camp is all about the skills — The Main Stage features a visit to the Fort Wayne TinCaps Stadium and Mad Ants Field house.

WEEK 9: August 3-7, Water Works 2

This camp is so popular we revisit our favorite watering holes for some more fun in the sun with trips to our local pools and water parks.

WEEK 10: August 10-14, Space Camp

3-2-1 Blast off!  This camp features a sleep over at Camp Clay with a visit to the Neil Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta, where all will explore the stars and outer space.

Each camp runs Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with pick up and drop off at Camp Clay.  Weekly rates are $80 for Van Wert Y members and $120 for potential (non) Y members.

“Our camps provide a safe, affordable and fun day camp for elementary school kids that offer a host of activities to entice everyone’s interest, in an atmosphere that reinforces the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility,” said Camp Clay Facilitator Clint Myers.

Myers also commented on a new program called the Counselor in Training (CIT) program.

“This program is for Teens ages 13-17 that would like to shadow our Day Camp leaders to develop and practice leadership skills through hands-on interaction with younger children and develop professional reference for college or the job market,” he noted. “This program is $200 for five weeks, $40 for each additional week, with the option to do as much or as little as you would like.”

Information about this and other programs available at the Y can be found by calling 419.238.0443, visiting the Y’s website at www.vwymca.org – where a camp brochure featuring a complete list of camps and field trips, as well as the registration form, can be downloaded; or by emailing YMCA Program Director Mitch Price at mitch@vwymca.org. Online camp registration is also now available by visiting the Y’s website.

Each camp includes a great and different field trip. Parent volunteers are needed for both driving and camp supervision. If interested, contact Price.
