Seven members from the Van Wert Area Photography Club and the Grand Lake Photography Club attended the 13th Woodland Indian Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 20, for some unique photo opportunities.  Located at the Seven Eagles Historical Education Center, just outside Grand Rapids, Ohio, the two-day event offered chances for visitors to experience Native American arts and crafts, food, dancing and music.

In addition, the Center itself provided more photo opportunities with permanent sites representing a Woodland Indian Village, a 1750 Trading Post, a 1790 Tavern and an 1800 Log Cabin.  All the sites offered the chance to shoot both inside and outside of the structures.

Five of the group arrived shortly after the event opened at 10 a.m.  After scouting the grounds for pictures and sampling the food offered by vendors, they settled in for the grand entrance of dancers and drummers which was scheduled to take place at 12:30 p.m.  Some additional shots were provided by a gentleman who was really dressed for the occasion.  He toured through the crowd and was very gracious about posing by himself or with family members.  With almost 40 minutes yet to wait and the lure of the Ohio State football game at 3 p.m. the group decided to leave.

Mike and Candy Taylor wisely arrived about the time the rest had decided to leave.  As a result, Mike got some outstanding pictures of the dancers in their colorful garb.  He has them posted, as do others, on the Van Wert Area Photography Club’s Facebook page.

The club’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, 7 p.m., at 114 S. Race St. here in Van Wert.  Members who participated in the Black Pine Animal Sanctuary trip or the Woodland Indian Celebration are encouraged to bring five of their best shots of each on a flash drive to the meeting for exhibition and discussion.  Anyone with an interest in these photos is welcome to attend.
