Lester H. Sherer, 90, of Haviland, died at 11:16 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born October 10, 1925, the son of Lester H. and Linnie I. Sherer, who both preceded him in death. On November 8, 1947, he married the former Carolyn J. Tomlinson, who survives in Haviland.

Other survivors include his children, Roger A. (Vicky) Sherer of Paulding, Karla K. American Flag for obituaries 6-2011(Rick) Welch of Grover Hill, and Stephen A. Sherer of Pineville, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Tammy Sherer of Paulding and Dawn (Travis) LaFountain of Grover Hill; three great-grandchildren, Kodey Stripe of Paulding, and Linsey and Caleb LaFountain of Grover Hill; and a brother-in-law, Richard Ackerman of Hanover, Michigan.

A sister, Barbara Ackerman; and his in-laws, Dr. Harold and Jane Tomlinson, and Bruns and Helen Griffiths, also preceded him in death.

Lester served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was a Purple Heart recipient and participated in the D-Day invasion in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He worked at Borden’s in Van Wert for 29½ years until the plant closed. He then was the maintenance and property manager for ACME Rentals in Van Wert, retiring in September 2014. He was a lifelong member of Country Chapel United Methodist Church in Haviland, where he served as a trustee and treasurer, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 in Van Wert.

One of his greatest joys was going on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He had also served on Haviland Village Council and was village mayor for several terms.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, November 30, at Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding. Burial will be in Blue Creek Cemetery, where graveside military honors will be rendered.

Calling hours are from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, November 29, and an hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials: Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center or Country Chapel United Methodist Church.
