Woman faces charges in fatal accident

Charges have been filed in connection with the accident that killed former Van Wert Solid Waste District Manager George Brake in September.

Babette L. Stewart, 38, of Van Wert, has been charged with vehicular homicide, a misdemeanor of the first degree, and vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor, in connection with the accident, which occurred the morning of September 23.

Stewart will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 21, in Van Wert Municipal Court.

Brake, 58, was killed when Stewart, who was driving a Ford F-250 pickup truck, allegedly failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of State and Mendon roads and broadsided Brake’s 1971 Volkswagen Beetle.

Brake was taken to Van Wert County Hospital, but died later of injuries received in the crash.
