Roundup: Knights win, VW, Lancers lose

The Van Wert Lady Cougars had their chance to win their first game of the year, but a late rally by Kenton fueled a 69-57 Western Buckeye League win for the Lady Wildcats Thursday night in the Cougars’ Den.

The Cougars led 54-52 with a little over 6 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t close it out, as Kenton went on a 17-3 run to get the win.

After an early spurt by the Wildcats, Van Wert’s offense began to click and the Cougars trailed by a point, 19-18, at the end of the first quarter. Kenton extended its lead to four points, 37-33, at the half, but Van Wert was able to get it back to a point, 50-49, at the three-quarter point.

Van Wert had two players in double figures, led by Ally Jackson’s 13 points. Meghan Moonshower added 12 points, while Cassidy Meyers scored 9 for the Lady Cougs. Kenton had four players in double figures, led by Ashley Morris’ 15 points. Ellie Miller added 14 points, while Sara Hoyt scored 11 points, and Layne Taylor added 10 for the Wildcats.

The Crestview Lady Knights got out to a fast start and needed it in beating Lima Central Catholic 55-40. The Knights led 18-1 after the first quarter, but then saw LCC outscore them 39-27 the rest of way to make it a contest.

Crestview was led by Emily Bauer’s 17 points, while Paige Motycka added 11 points for the Lady Knights. LCC’s Madison Stolly was game’s top scorer with 23 points, but was the only T-Bird in double figures.

Columbus Grove showed why it is one of the top teams in Division IV with a 74-30 shellacking of Lincolnview Thursday night in Northwest Conference girls’ basketball action at Lincolnview.

The Lady Bulldogs led 22-4 at the end of the first quarter and up their lead to 30 points, 44-14, at the half. It was 57-19 at the end of the third quarter.

Jade Clement was Grove’s big offensive weapon, scoring 27 points in the game to lead all scorers. Lynea Diller added 14 points, while Paige Bellman scored 9 for the Lady ‘Dogs.

Kayla Schimmoeller led the Lady Lancers with 16 points, while Katlyn Wendel added 8 for Lincolnview.
