Carroll clobbers Cougs; Lancers win 18th

The Van Wert Cougar boys got blitzed by Fort Wayne Carroll on Saturday, losing 72-38 in a game that was close only in the first quarter.

The Cougars (4-13) trailed by just a point, 17-16, at the end of the first quarter, but Carroll (14-3) then went on a 13-8 run in the second period to go up by six, 30-24, at the half. The Fort Wayne squad pretty much put the game away in the third stanza with a 20-6 run that put Carroll up by 20, 50-30, after three.

Another big run (22-8) in the final quarter resulted in the 34-point victory for Carroll.

Van Wert was led by Colin Smith’s 15 points, but no one else made it into double figures. Carroll had three players in double figures, led by Kyle Mallers’ 19 points, while Jacob Redding score 14 points and Kelham Brown added 10. Tony Martin had 9 points for Fort Wayne.

Carroll shot the eyes out of the basket, knocking down 28 of 47 (59.6 percent), while the Cougars were held to 14 of 31 shooting (45.2 percent). Both teams were perfect at the free throw line, with Van Wert hitting 7 of 7 and Carroll 9 of 9.

The Fort Wayne squad outrebounded the Cougars 20-12 and also had fewer turnovers, 9-19.

The Van Wert junior varsity team also lost, 61-36. The Cougar JVs were led in scoring by Blake Henry and Drew Bagley, who both had 12 points for Van Wert. Nathan Fish scored 15 for Carroll.

The Lincolnview Lancers got a scare from Delphos St. John’s, but rallied in the second half for a 13-point win, 53-40, in Saturday’s non-conference match-up.

Both teams started slow, with Lincolnview (18-0) leading by a point, 8-7, at the end of the first quarter. The Blue Jays (7-9) then went on a 12-7 run in the second quarter to go up by four points, 19-15, at the half. The second half was all Lincolnview, as the Lancers outscored St. John’s 16-10 in the third stanza to lead by a basket, 31-29.

Lincolnview then went on a 22-11 run in the final stanza to ice the game.

Trevor Neate led the Lancers with 15 points, while Hayden Ludwig added 10 points, Austin Leeth scored 9, and Derek Youtsey added 8 points for Lincolnview. The Jays were led by Tim Kreeger’s 15 points, while Robby Saine added 8 points for St. John’s.
