Patrol cruiser hits cyclist on Celina street

CELINA — A Celina man was hospitalized this morning after he was struck by an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser while riding his bicycle on Main Street in Celina.

On Friday, Daniel T. Bruns, 62, of Celina, was riding his bicycle in the northbound lane on Main Street, south of Sugar Street, at approximately 3:21 a.m. and was struck by a northbound Ohio State osplogoHighway Patrol cruiser driven by Trooper Kara Kavaliauskas of the Van Wert Post.

Bruns was transported to Coldwater Hospital by Rockford EMS for serious but non-life threatening injuries. Trooper Kavaliauskas was uninjured in the crash.

Bruns admitted to consuming alcohol and using marijuana prior to the crash, and his alcohol consumption and drug use are being considered as factors in the crash.

Bruns was not wearing a helmet and was riding his bike near the centerline of Main Street when the crash occurred. No charges have been filed, as the crash is still under investigation.

The Celina Police Department, Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, Rockford EMS, and Superior Collision Towing assisted the Patrol at the scene.
