Area hiking-biking trail has new service

VW independent/submitted information

The Van Wert County Park District’s hiking-biking trail has a new addition that will make it even more accessible to Van Wert area residents.

The 4½-mile long trail has been used extensively by walkers, joggers, and bicyclists for the past year. Now, thanks to the efforts of retired Union Township resident, Tom Gordon, the trail can also be enjoyed by the elderly and disabled, who up until now have not be able to enjoy the trail.

Gordon has constructed a six-passenger carrier with padded seats that he pulls behind a four-wheeler. Having received approval from the Park District Board, he is ready to begin offering rides every first and second Thursday, from April through October. The 1½-hour trips load at the Rotary Athletic Complex on John Brown Road at 10 and 11:39 a.m. and 1 and 2:30 p.m. The rides are restricted to people who are unable to walk the trail.

The first Thursday is reserved for assisted living and nursing home residents, with others accommodated when seating is available. The second Thursday is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rides will be canceled for inclement weather, and it is suggested that riders bring an umbrella for hot, sunny days to protect themselves from the sun.

For additional information or to schedule a ride, contact Gordon at 419.203.4893. For other information, contact the Van Wert Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at 419.238.9378 or Park District Board member Bill Swank at 419.238.6179.
