Children’s Garden programs announced
VW independent/submitted information
The Van Wert Parks Department and Van Wert Master Gardeners will offer educational programs at the Smiley Park Children’s Garden this summer.
All programs are free, but participants must register by calling the Park Office at 419.238.9121. Each session will be from 10-11:30 a.m. and will include a story time lesson, snack, and a finished product to take home.

The program schedule for this summer is as follows:
June 9 — “Remarkable Friendships”
What a great opportunity to meet new friends! Participants will be introduced to the animals and plants found in a garden. Kids will also be introduced to a “new” and special addition to gardens that they will love to learn about, as well as discover the proper way to plant and have the opportunity to plant in some of the garden’s flowerbeds.
July 21 — “Blooming Boots”
Taking care of plants is always a task! One of the most time consuming thing is watering plants to keep them thriving. This session will introduce kids to plants that grow with little water, and even in drought conditions. Participants are asked to bring an old shoe or boot that has three holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.
August 11 — “The World of Insects”
Special guest speaker Curtis Young of the local Ohio State University Extension Office will show kids what kinds of insects are found in the garden and what benefits they offer to plants and soil. A scavenger hunt will also be held as kids learn about things in the gardens. Each participant will also take home an activity from the day’s session.
