HEBRON — The Van Wert High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the first invitational of their respective seasons this past Saturday at the OHSAA Early Season Invitational. Held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, site of the OHSAA State Cross Country Championship races, the invitational featured many of the top teams from around Ohio.

The varsity boys’ team brought home hardware by placing second in a field of 23 teams. The varsity girls finished in 11th place out of 21 teams.

“Today was an opportunity to get our first race under our belts and see where we are at,” said Coach Ryan Holliday. “We’ve put a lot of work in over the summer and it was great to finally get out there and race.

“Despite humid and windy conditions that slowed times down, we had some great performances,” Moody added. “We learned a lot about ourselves today and plan on using these races to get better.”

The teams will compete again this Saturday at the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jay Invitational in Delphos.
