A Van Wert woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident that occurred Thursday afternoon on U.S. 224.
Alice Wise, 66, was pronounced dead at Van Wert County Hospital from injuries received in the crash, which occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
According to troopers from the Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Mrs. Wise was a passenger in a 2005 Honda driven by her husband, William Wise III, 67, also of Van Wert. The Wises were eastbound on U.S. 224 when a 2003 GMC Envoy, driven west on Route 224 by Lloyd Conway, 57, of Charlotte, Michigan, apparently tried to make a left turn onto Liberty Union Road in front of the local couple, causing a collision between the two vehicles.
Mr. Wise was also taken to the local hospital by the Van Wert EMS Squad, where he was treated initially and then transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Conway and a passenger, Anya Straka-Conway, 26, were treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.
Troopers said both Wises were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, as was Mr. Conway. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the accident. U.S. 224 was closed for approximately an hour to clean up the scene and has since reopened. The crash remains under investigation.
The Van Wert Post was assisted at the scene by the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio City Fire and EMS, Van Wert Fire and EMS, 2As Towing, and Superior Collision.
For the upcoming Labor Day weekend, the Patrol reminds motorists to designate a sober driver, not drive distracted, and always wear a safety belt.
