Betty R. Jewel, 86, passed away at 6:42 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017, at her residence in Van Wert.

She was born August 5, 1930, in Firebrick in Lawrence County. Her parents were Allen “Allie” and Thelma Opal (Leonard) Barnhart., who both preceded her in death. She was one of 14 children. She married Irvin Jewel Jr. on January 28, 1950, and he died March 13, 1989.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Ann (Rodger) Johnson and Debra Kay (Dan) Hardeman, both of Van Wert; three grandchildren, Coral (Brandon) Fetzer, Michael Dean Johnson, and Rebecca (Chris) McKlveen; two stepgrandchildren, Sara Novy and Ryan (Tina) Hardeman; nine great-grandchildren, Caleb Fetzer, Natalie Fetzer, Hailey Vandemark, Jakob Novy, Grant Hardeman, Charlie Hardeman, Aiden McClain, Rylan McClain, and Brynlee McKlveen; a brother, Bill (Evelyn) Barnhart of Van Wert; and three sisters, Ellen (Ed) Grimes, Janet (Don) Risley, and Karen (Dennis) Stout, all of Van Wert.

Betty graduated from Union Center School then went to work at Red Horse Inn as a car hop. She later worked at Continental Can Company and Aeroquip (Eaton). She was a member of First Church of God in Van Wert, where her many activities included teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, treasurer, Women of the Church of God, and several other committees. One of her great joys over the years was attending the Anderson Camp Meeting with her husband.

Four sisters, Ceola Shindeldecker, Loretta Rader, Rosalee Miller, and Arbadella Coressel; and five brothers, Harrell, Allie, Delbert, Bobby and Jimmy Barnhart, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 13, at First Church of God in Van Wert, with Pastor Jason Hollar officiating. Burial will follow in Scott Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert and an hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
