Motycka, McCoy lead C’view over L’view

CONVOY — A first half surge lifted the Crestview Lady Knights to a 48-31 Northwest Conference win over rival Lincolnview on Thursday night.

On the strength of a trey by Lexi Gregory at the first quarter buzzer, Crestview enjoyed a 16-6 lead then the Lady Knights defense clamped down in the second period, holding the Lady Lancers to four points, all on foul shots.

Lyvia Black opened second quarter scoring with a triple then Ally McCoy followed up with a bucket that extended Crestview’s lead to 21-8. Linconview ended a lengthy scoring drought that began midway through the first period when Alena Looser hit two free throws with 3:36 showing on the second period clock. A minute later Paige Motycka drilled a three pointer to give Crestview a 24-8 lead. Lincolnview’s Lakin Brant hit two foul shots to pull the Lady Lancers to within 14, but Motycka drained another trey to give the Lady Knights a 27-10 halftime advantage.

“They hurt us early on with their perimeter shooting and offensive rebounding,” Lincolnview head coach Dan Williamson said. “We got some good looks on offense but struggled to make shots. Paige Motycka hurt us in the first two quarters but we did a much better job on her in the second half.”

“Our girls played hard and didn’t quit, but our poor shooting was too much to overcome,” Williamson added.

Lincolnview’s Kayla Schimmoeller opened third quarter scoring with a three pointer, but McCoy countered with a bucket followed by two foul shots from Black, then Emma Bowen’s offensive rebound and return shot put Crestview ahead 34-13.

Olivia Gorman scored Lincolnview’s final six points of the quarter on a trey, a foul shot and a basket, but Crestview received a baskets from Motycka and Gregory and two free throws from Black for a 38-19 lead.

The Lady Lancers tried to rally early in the fourth quarter with a quick 7-0 run. Looser hit a triple, then Gorman, who scored all fourteen of her points in the second half, connected on two free throws and had a steal and a basket to trim the deficit to 38-26 with 7:09 left in the period.

However, the Lady Knights scored six unanswered points on a pair of Black free throws and buckets by McCoy and Motycka to push Crestview’s lead to 44-26. Motycka finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while McCoy tallied 12 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

“I was really pleased with my seniors tonight on their last home game together,” Crestview head coach Mark Gregory said. “Ally had some nice buckets inside, Paige mixed inside and out, and Lyv (nine points) had another nice effort on both ends.”

“We got out to a great start and never looked back,” Gregory added. “It was our sixth straight win in a tournament atmosphere against Lincolnview.”

The Lady Knights were 18 of 39 (46 percent) from the floor while holding Lincolnview to 8 of 37 (21 percent). Crestview held a commanding 31-12 rebounding advantage.

Crestview (12-6, 4-2 NWC) will travel to Celina on Monday, while Lincolnview (8-11, 1-5 NWC) will play at Fort Jennings on Tuesday.
