St. Marys 8 Van Wert 7 (baseball)

Van Wert jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 5-1 but couldn’t hang on, as host St. Marys rallied for an 8-7 Western Buckeye League baseball win on Friday.

Hayden Maples opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single that plated Jake Lautzenheiser. The Cougars (3-2, 1-2 WBL) then took advantage of three successive errors by the Roughriders, with TJ Reynolds, Hayden Maples and Lawson Blackmore each crossing home plate.

A solo home run put St. Marys (1-7, 1-3 WBL) on the board in the bottom of the first, but Jonathan Lee scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second. The Roughriders trimmed the lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but James Acquaviva scored on a third inning grounder by Jalen McCracken.

St. Marys tied the game at 6-6 in the fourth, but the Cougars took a 7-6 lead when McCracken slugged a fifth inning single that scored Acquaviva.

The Roughriders plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, then after Acquaviva reached first on an error in the seventh, St. Marys put the game away 1-2-3.

The Cougars finished the game with four hits. Acquaviva scored two runs and McCracken finished with a pair of RBI.

Owen Treece allowed 10 hits and struck out four, while walking one.

Crestview 2 Parkway 0 (baseball)

Crestview scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and won Friday’s home defensive struggle against Parkway, 2-0.

A Charles Stefanek single in the fourth scored Riley Saylor, then Brett Schumm crossed home plate again in the fifth.

Saylor pitched a complete game and held the Panthers to five hits while striking out four.

Van Wert 7 St. Mary’s 4 (softball)

The Lady Cougars upped their mark to 4-1 (2-0 WBL) with Friday’s 7-4 win over St. Marys at Jubilee Park.

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Van Wert scored four times to take a 5-4 lead, with Adrianna Grothause, Katie Coplin, Drew Kennedy and Olivia Kline each crossing home plate.

The Lady Cougars tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Alexis Metz scored on an error and Coplin reached home on an RBI single by Lauren Moore.

Laine Spoor earned the win, who allowed six hits and four walks, while striking out four.

Fairview 15 Crestview 4 (softball)

Fairview scored eight runs in the seventh inning in a 15-4 defeat of the Lady Knights on Friday.

Lexi Gregory had a double and a homerun, while Hannah Binnion also had a home run for Crestview (5-5). Ashley Call and Emma Bowen each had doubles.

Kali Small pitched 5.1 innings and gave up eight hits while striking out four.
