George A. Palombi
George A. Palombi, 83, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at his residence in Van Wert.

He was born November 11, 1934, in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, the son of Sante and Pasqualina (DeAngelis) Palombi, who both preceded him in death. On April 4, 1959, he married the former Sandra M. Ciccone, who survives.
Other survivors include his three children, John (Nancy) Palombi of Prattville, Alabama, Sandra (Chuck) Thompson of Pomona, California, and George M. Palombi of Van Wert; five grandchildren, Celeste and David Thompson, Daniel, Gregory, and Jared Palombi; and a brother, Anthony Palombi of West Middlesex, Pennsylvania.
A brother, John, also preceded him in death.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert. George retired after a 45-year career in the steel industry with the structural steel engineering departmentĀ of Republic Steel, Stran, and Varco Pruden. He was a member of American Legion Post 178, the National Rifle Association, Elks Lodge 1197, and a founding member of the Van Wert Centurions Club.
George had many hobbies over the years. He was a firearms enthusiast. He also enjoyed reading, golf, and was a die-hard fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father Stan Szybka officiating. Military honors will be rendered by units of Legion Post 178 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both of Van Wert. Burial will be at a later date at St. Marys Cemetery in Hermitage, Pennsylvania.
Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert.
Preferred memorials: American Legion Post 178 or the James Cancer Clinic at Ohio State University.
