Tomlinson, Alverez lead VW to wins

At Bryan, the Cougars picked up win No. 1 of the young soccer season with a 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears on Thursday.

A free kick by Isaac Alverez just outside the 18 foot box was the difference.

“We controlled possession for the first 20 minutes again then went back and forth for the next 10,” Van Wert head coach Matt Hernandez said. “Bryan controlled the last 10 minutes of the half, but after that we traded punches for awhile but we then focused on playing good team defense to preserve the victory.”

Van Wert (1-1) will play at Wapakoneta next Thursday.

Van Wert 5 Crestview 1 (girls)

The Lady Cougars notched their first victory of the season with a 5-1 win over visiting Crestview on Wednesday.

Elizabeth Tomlinson scored four goals for Van Wert, while Sierra Shafer scored the other.

Jade Sheaffer scored Crestview’s lone goal.

The Lady Knights (0-2) will play at Paulding on Tuesday, while Van Wert (1-1) will host Wapakoneta the same day.
