TOLEDO — Hayden Maples had a big day against Edon at Fifth Third Field in Toledo.
Maples struck out 11 and held the Bombers to just two hits, and the senior knocked in a pair of runs in a 7-0 victory.
Offensively, the Cougars had a solid day at the plate 12 hits, including four extra base hits. Jake Lautzenheiser and TJ Reynolds each had a double and three hits, while Nathan Temple had a double and a pair of hits. Parker Conrad had a triple for Van Wert.
Lawson Blackmore singled in Lautzenheiser in the first inning, then Reynolds scored on a sacrifice fly by Owen Treece in the second. In the fourth inning, Reynolds increased the lead to 3-0 with an RBI double that plated Conrad, then Treece, who finished with two RBI, singled in Reynolds.
Conrad’s sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Temple, then Maples drove in Mason McHugh and Lautzenheiser in the sixth inning.
Van Wert (11-2) is scheduled to host Wayne Trace today.
Ottoville 10 Crestview 4
OTTOVILLE – Three Ottoville pitchers combined to hold Crestview to five hits and the Big Green defeated the Knights 10-4 on Saturday.
Dylan Kemper pitched the first third of opening inning and allowed two runs on one hit, while walking four. Trae Schlagbaum came in and pitched 5.1 innings and gave up a pair of runs on two hits, with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks. Josh Thorbahn pitched the remainder of the game and allowed two hits while fanning three and walking three.
Crestview’s Griffin Painter went 3.2 innings and gave up seven hits, while striking out 10 and walking three. Kaden Short went 1.1 innings and gave up four hits and Riley Saylor pitched the remaining inning and struck out two.
Two of Crestview’s runs came in the first inning, when Brant Richardson drove in Kaden Short, and when Richardson scored on a bases loaded walk. The remaining two runs were scored in the sixth, when Korbin Hartman singled in Saylor and Short and cut Ottoville’s lead to 6-4.
The Big Green answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Schlaugbaum finished with a team high three hits and Dylan Kemper had a home run and three RBI.
Crestview (3-6) is scheduled to host Delphos Jefferson today.
Tennis
Cougars host Invitational
Zane Fast and Michael Hellman each won titles, and the Cougars finished second as a team at the first ever Van Wert Invitational on Saturday.
Ottawa-Glandorf won the title by a single point, 17-16.
At second singles, Fast defeated Caleb Humlinger of St. Marys Memorial 6-0, 6-0, then topped Ottawa-Glandorf’s Sam Schmenk 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Hellman claimed the third singles title by beating Bryant Schroeder of Ottawa-Glandorf 6-4, 6-1, and Shawnee’s Gabriel Rutter 6-1, 6-4.
Van Wert’s first doubles team of Kaden Thomas and Nathan Ruger lost to Ottawa-Glandorf’s Carter Welch and Colin Welch 6-2, 6-1 in the finals, and the Cougars fell in the finals at second doubles as well, with Jace Fast and Nick Carter losing to Kamron Maag and Parker Schomaeker 6-2, 6-0.
Track and Field
MINSTER — Crestview finished 10th out of 15 teams and the Lady Knights finished 15th at Saturday’s Minster Memorial Invitational.
Josiah Beck (second place, 300 meter hurdles, 44.79) was the top finisher for the Knights.
Crestview will return to action today at the Hicksville Quad with Antwerp and Continental.
