Girls hoops: Crestview wins, VW falls

Crestview and Van Wert each faced Midwest Athletic Conference schools on Tuesday, with the Lady Knights defeating Parkway, while the Lady Cougars fell to undefeated Marion Local.

Crestview 64 Parkway 31

CONVOY — Crestview broke into the win column in a big way with a 64-31 victory over visiting Parkway on Monday.

The Lady Knights set the tone early, leading 19-8 after the first quarter, with Olivia Cunningham scoring nine of her game high 17 points in the period. Kylie Etzler added five points in the quarter, then tacked on six more in the second period to help Crestview enjoy a 34-19 halftime advantage.

The Lady Knights extended the lead to 56-27 after three quarters, with Kaylee Wolford scoring four of her 12 points in the period.

Crestview shot 25 of 49 for the game, converted 10 of 15 free throws and held a 25-18 rebounding advantage.

Parkway, who was led by Claire Eichler’s 13 points and seven rebounds, was 12 of 36 from the floor and was 5 of 9 from the foul line. The Lady Panthers had 18 turnovers, compared to 13 for Crestview.

Crestview (1-2) will begin Northwest Conference play at Spencerville on Thursday, while Parkway (1-1) will open Midwest Athletic Conference competition at Minster.

Marion Local 44 Van Wert 28

MARIA STEIN — Van Wert led Marion Local 9-8 after the first quarter, but the Lady Flyers outscored the Lady Cougars 12-4 in the second period and never looked back on the way to a 44-28 victory.

Armed with a 20-13 halftime lead, Marion Local (4-0) extended the advantage to 32-23 after three quarters, the outscored the visitors 12-5 in the fourth quarter.

Kyra Welch led Van Wert with eight points, while Jamison Clouse and Jaylyn Rickard each finished with six. Caylee Phillips and Sofi Houg each chipped in with four.

Marion Local’s Heidi Rethman led all scorers with 15 and Alana Pohlman scored 10.

Van Wert (1-2) will open the home portion of the schedule and Western Buckeye League play against Celina on Thursday.
