The Green Meadows Conference has voted to remove longtime member Holgate from the GMC, but the school board moved quickly to join the Buckeye Border Conference.

The annoucement to remove Holgate was made Thursday in a press release issued by the Green Meadows Conference executive committee.

“The GMC executive board met today to discuss Holgate’s future in the GMC. There was a motion and a second to remove Holgate from the GMC. The results of the vote were in favor of the motion to remove Holgate from the conference. The GMC executive committee agreed that removing Holgate from the conference was in the best interest of the GMC and Holgate.”

“Holgate has been a part of the GMC for many years and our executive committee thanks them for years of friendly competition and membership. The GMC wishes their community, administration, coaches, and student-athletes the best of luck in the future.”

“In the coming months, the GMC will have discussions regarding the process in accordance with the bylaws, competitive priorities, and membership recruitment that it believes to be in the best interest of all sports across the conference.”

Hours later, the Holgate Board of Education voted 4-0 to join the Buckeye Border Conference. Earlier this month, the school board voted 3-2 to decline an invitation from the BBC and remain in the GMC. The school had been a Green Meadows Conference member since 1968.

The Tigers will join BBC teams Edon, Fayette, Hilltop, Montpelier, North Central, Pettsiville and Styker in all sports but football. The school is a member of the Northern 8 Conference, Ohio’s first 8-man football conference.

While speculation is rampant about the GMC’s next move, the conference will have seven schools – Antwerp, Ayersville, Edgerton, Fairview, Hicksville, Tinora and Wayne Trace.
