Girls: VW wins, Lancers, Knights fall

Van Wert used a big fourth quarter to defeat Kenton, while Crestview jumped ahead early but fell to Lima Central Catholic, and Lincolnview was outscored by Delphos Jefferson in girls’ basketball action on Thursday night.

Van Wert 46 Kenton 40

A 13-7 fourth quarter scoring advantage allowed Van Wert to secure a 46-40 Western Buckeye League win over Kenton on Thursday.

Jamison Clouse scored a team high 13 points – four in the first quarter, three in the second and six in the fourth quarter, including a pair of baskets and a pair of foul shots. Kyra Welch added eight points and Caylee Phillips chipped in with seven.

Kenton led 14-13 after the first quarter, with Jenna Manns knocking down a pair of treys and a free throw, but Van Wert eased ahead to lead 24-22 at halftime, thanks to Clouse and baskets by Carlee Young, Jerica Huebner and Allison Schaufelberger, and a pair of foul shots by Welch. Manns hit two more threes to account of six of Kenton’s eight points in the quarter.

Sofi Houg scored two baskets in the third quarter and Welch and Phillips each added one, while Manns added five points and Lindsey Smith four, and the game was tied 33-33 entering the fourth quarter. Manns finished with 18 points while Smith netted 10 points.

The win improved Van Wert’s record to 5-13 (3-4 WBL), while Kenton fell to 6-11 (0-7 WBL).

The Lady Cougars will travel to Bryan on Tuesday.

Lima Central Catholic 56 Crestview 49

LIMA — Crestview’s three game winning streak came to an end with a 56-49 loss to Lima Central Catholic on Thursday.

The Lady Knights (9-9) got off to a hot start and led 19-8 late in the first quarter, with Olivia Cunningham accounting for seven of those points, but Lima Central Catholic stormed back with 11 unanswered points, including a trey by Olivia Stolly at the buzzer, then eight straight points to start the second quarter that tied the game 19-19.

A bucket by Bailey Gregory gave Crestview a 21-19 lead and a bit later, a basket by Raegan Hammons put the Lady Knights ahead 23-22 with 3:31 left until halftime. However, Crestview wouldn’t score again in the period, while Lima Central Catholic (11-8) scored the final four points to lead 26-22 at halftime.

Crestview pulled to within two, 29-27 midway through the third quarter, but Lima Central Catholic used a trey by Mary Kelly Mulcahy and a shot at the buzzer to extend the lead to 36-30 at the end of the period. Mulcahy went on to finish with a game high 19 points, while Rosie Williams tallied 14 points.

The Lady Thunderbirds pushed the lead to 49-38 halfway through the fourth quarter, but back-to-back triples by Lexi Gregory and Bailey Gregory pulled Crestview to within five, 49-44, before Lima Central Catholic used free throws down the stretch to help notch the win.

Cunningham led Crestview with 13 points, while Bailey Gregory and Lexi Gregory each scored 11.

Crestview will play at Celina on Tuesday.

Delphos Jefferson 60 Lincolnview 54

DELPHOS — Lincolnview hung tough but fell to Northwest Conference foe Delphos Jefferson 60-54 on Thursday.

Kaylee Buzzard and Addy Stewart combined for 13 points in the first quarter and the Wildcats led 21-14 at the end of the period. Brianna Ebel scored four points in the opening stanza, and Lana Carey and Annie Mendenhall each drained a three pointer.

In the second quarter, Rosie McGue scored seven points and Stewart added four more, offsetting eight points by Lincolnview’s Kendall Bollenbacher, and Delphos Jefferson took a 37-27 lead into the locker room.

Aly Lindeman, who scored 15 of her game high 18 points in the second half, put in six points, including four free throws in the third quarter, while Carey added four more for the Lady Lancers. Lindeman added nine more points in the fourth quarter, with seven of those coming from the foul line. For the game, she finished 14-20 from the free throw line. Mendenhall scored five points in the final quarter, while Ebel and Carey each added a trey.

Bollenbacher finished with 16 points, Carey scored 13 and Mendenhall 10. In addition to Lindeman’s 18, Buzzard added 16, and Steward and McGue added 10 apiece.

Lincolnview (2-16, 1-5 NWC) will travel to Fort Jennings on Monday and Delphos Jefferson (8-10, 4-2 NWC) will host Columbus Grove next Thursday.
