Wrestling: Steyer, Kline to districts

Van Wert is sending two wrestlers and an alternate to the Division II districts, while Lincolnview has one alternate for the Division III district.

The top four wrestlers in each sectional qualifed for the next level, with fifth place finishers tabbed as alternates.

Division II

DEFIANCE — Van Wert’s Gabe Steyer rolled to a sectional title, winning the 138 point weight class with a 10-0 major decision over Wauseon’s Lawson Grime.

After a first round bye, Steyer earned a 15-0 technical fall over Shawnee’s Mason Adlesh in the quarterfinals, then pinned Napoleon’s Caleb Sell in 2:53 in the semifinals.

At 285 pounds, Eli Kline qualified for district competition with a fourth place finish. In the quarterfinals, Kline pinned Bowling Green’s David Meyer in 53 seconds, but lost a 12-2 major decision to Napoleon’s Demitrius Hernandez in the semifinals, before carving out a narrow 6-5 win over Cael Rostorfer of Wapakoneta in the consolation semifinals. Kline fell via a 12-3 major decision to Bryan wrestler Christian Hollister in the third place match.

Macein Bigham will serve as an alternate at 152 pounds. Bigham lost a 13-4 major decision to Jacob Schlesselman of Wapakoneta in the quarterfinals, but battled back with a 12-7 consolation round victory over Kayden Sharpe of St. Marys Memorial, before falling 10-5 to Defiance’s Dominic Tracy in the consolation semifinal. Bigham then went on to finish fifth with a 4-2 win over Michael Wolff of Bryan.

Wauseon won the 12 team sectional with 265.5 points. Van Wert finished 10th with 59.5 points.

The Division II district will be held Friday and Saturday at Norwalk High School.

Division III

LIMA — Lincolnview 160 pound wrestler Dylan Bowyer will be an alternate at the district level after recording a fifth place finish at the Division III sectional at Lima Central Catholic on Saturday.

Bowyer pinned Delphos Jefferson’s Ben McKee in 3:15 in the fifth place match. Bowyer was pinned in 1:42 by Kenton’s Carter Bays in the quarterfinals, but bounced back by pinning Chaz Neuenschwander of Parkway in 1:42 in the third consolation match. In the consolation semifinals, Bowyer was pinned in 2:08 by Mark Wrasman of Delphos St. John’s.
