Local student musicians perform at recital

Area residents had the chance to hear student music virtuosity on Sunday afternoon when the Van Wert County Foundation hosted the 17th annual Young Artists Recital at First United Methodist Church.

Music students from Crestview, Lincolnview, and Van Wert entertained those who attended with pieces they had prepared for the Ohio Music Education Association solo and ensemble contest.

Those who performed included:

The Van Wert Clarinet Choir (Meghan Jensen, Makenzie Bowers, Olivia Rutkowski, Mallorie Jarrett, Janie Trejo, Gracie Price, Ashley Brown, Leigha Hill, Maggie Cassidy, Arber Hofacker, Grace Doctor, and Jaryn Pierce) performed “Caprice for Clarinets” by Clare Grundman.

The Van Wert Cordoba Brass Sextet (Levi Newell, Hunter Sherer, Reanna Chancy, Isaac Hawn, Taylor Feasby, and Kendall Rauch) played “Cordoba” by Isaac Albeniz (arranged by Walters).

Allison Schaufelberger sang “The Ash Grove” by Benjamin Britten, accompanied by Marilyn Alessandrini.

Ben Lange performed a saxophone piece entitled “Sicilienne and Allegro” by J.S. Bach.

The Lincolnview Ladies Ensemble (Morgan Anspach, Grace Sadowski, Kirsten Stemen, Kortnie Galloway, Lauren Jones, Emma Hatcher, Lillian Ogden, and Leah Wood) performed “In Time of Silver Rain” by Cynthia Gray, accompanied by Annette Hoverman.

Una VanWynsberghe performed a trumpet solo, “All ‘Antica”, by Alphonse Goeyens, accompanied by Leah Keysor.

The Van Wert Bassoon Trio (Jamie Burenga, Kayla Krites, and Piper Pierce) played “Gavotte” by Henry Purcell.

Pianist Elissa Miglin performs “Impromptu in A flat” by Franz Schubert.

Jamie Burenga performed a piano solo: “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair” by Claude Debussy.

Kirsten Stemen played flute on “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by J.S. Bach (arranged by Sidney Lawton), accompanied by Leah Keysor.

Rachel Spath performed “Raindrop” Prelude (Opus 28, No. 15) by Fredric Chopin on piano.

Kayla Papke played “Lamento” by Luigi Bassi (arranged by Voxman) on bass clarinet, accompanied by Marilyn Alessandrini.

Trumpeter Una VanWynsberghe plays “All ‘Antica” by Alphonse Goeyens.

Jordan Updegrove played a trombone solo, “Concert Piece No. 5”, by B.M. Blazevich, accompanied by Marilyn Alessandrini.

Elissa Miglin performed “Impromptu in A flat (Opus 90, No. 4) by Franz Schubert on piano.

Emma Hatcher sang “Wayfaring Stranger” by John Jacob Niles, with accompaniment by Annette Hoverman.

Evan Sroufe performed a piano solo, “Sonatina No. 1” (Opus 13, No. 1, 3rd Movement) by Dmitry Kabalevsky.

The Van Wert Sourwood Brass Sextet (Abbi Phillips, Taylor Feasby, Stephanie Geething, Cooper Adams, Lochlen Purmort, and Grace Dowler) performed “Sourwood Mountain” by Eric Ostling.

The recital was emceed by Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation Executive Director Tafi Stober. Larry Taylor helped coordinate the event.

Local music instructors involved in preparing the students for contest include Robert Sloan, Tina Decker, and Julia Reichert of Van Wert; Stacie Korte and Austin Ahlborn of Lincolnview; Jason Lozer of Crestview; and private instructors Larry Schaufelberger, Marilyn Alessandrini, Tony Alessandrini, and Annette Hoverman.
