City provides new income tax information

VW independent/submitted information

House Bill 197, signed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine on March 27 as the state’s response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, includes a number of tax-related measures, including extension of the tax filing deadline to July 15, which also applies to estimated payments.

The extension of due dates also applies to Van Wert city individual and municipal net profit tax, while the Ohio General Assembly also took action in regards to non-residents working from home. For the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, plus an additional 30 days, employees working from home or a temporary worksite will be considered as working from their “principal place of work”. There will be no non-resident refunds issued as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Van Wert Income Tax Administrator Jennifer Adams noted that, while the filing and payment due dates have been extended, she encourages local residents to file their city income tax returns as soon as possible, especially those who do not have a balance due.

In addition, for those making estimated payments for 2020, both the first quarter and second quarter estimated payments will be due on July 15, while the third quarter payment is due on the normal date of September 15.

The Van Wert Income Tax Department will not send out first quarter estimate bills, but payments can still be made by taxpayers for the first quarter. There will be no underpayment penalty or interest on the first and second quarter estimated payments, if made on or before July 15.

Adams also noted that, although the Municipal Building is currently closed to the public until further notice, returns and payments can be placed in an envelope marked “income tax” and put in the night drop box on the west side of the building at the water office drive-up window 24/7.

Tax returns and payments can also be mailed to: City of Van Wert, Income Tax Department, 515 E. Main St., Van Wert, OH 45891.
