Nesbitt historical marker to be dedicated
CONVOY — On Saturday, November 5, at 2 p.m., an Ohio historical marker commemorating Robert Nesbitt will be dedicated at the Sugar Ridge Cemetery located on Pollock Road. Robert Nesbitt emigrated from Ireland and named the village of Convoy after his birthplace.
This past year, Nesbitt’s tombstone and gravesite were restored through the efforts of the Convoy Community Foundation, the Convoy Business Association, Convoy Lions Club and Convoy Community Days Committee. The reverse side of the marker will recognize the significance of the Lincoln Highway in Ohio.
The dedication ceremony will be held in the Sugar Ridge Church. After the unveiling of the marker, a reception will be held at the church. The public is invited to both events.
Administered by the Ohio Historical Society, the Historical Markers’ program enables Ohioans to commemorate and celebrate local history and to learn more about the state. Designed to be permanent and highly visible, the historic markers are large cast-aluminum signs that tell stories about aspects of Ohio’s history.
The initiative was sponsored by the Van Wert County Historical Society and funded by a grant from Iberdrola Renewables. The historical society has assumed responsibility for the gravesite and marker. “The marker program is noteworthy because it reaches all corners of the state and combines the efforts of both local volunteers and the Ohio Historical Society,” said Michelle Crow-Dolby, assistant head of the Ohio Historical Society’s Local History Office in Columbus.
