What’s happening at St. Marys

By Nancy Replogle

The fifth graders at St. Mary of the Assumption School are studying different Indian tribes. The Aztec Indians were known for sacrifices, but they also made a codex or type of folding book as well as the Aztec calendar. Pictured are Mason McHugh, Ezra Frieser, Ava Courtney, and Rayana Thatcher.
The Mayans built many temple pyramid temples for their sacrifices in present day Mexico. Pictured are Alisha Terhark, Nathan Bidlack, Joe Schaufelberger, Caroline Kopack, and Adam Schrader.
Erienne Cassidy, Alisha Terhark, Caton Williamson, Jacob Lautzenheiser, Joe Schaufelberger, Risa Pollock, and Caroline Kopack are shown with models of Native American homes from the West.

In their research the fifth graders discovered that the Incas were great bridge builders. The children made a model of the Andes Mountains with a swinging bridge such as the Incas built in the 1400’s. Pictured are Erienne Cassidy, Caton Williamson, Erika Younts, Risa Pollock, and Jacob Lautzenheiser.

Eastern Native Americans made their homes using resources such as bark and saplings for making wigwams and longhouses. Nathan Bidlack, Mason McHugh, Erika Younts, Rayana Thatcher, Ava Courtney and Adam Schrader discovered that building this type of home was not an easy task.

The quiz bowl is a traditional event at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School for "Catholic Schools Week." Teams of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students compete against each other, answering questions in math, science, social studies, language arts and religion. The final round was a close contest between the "Archangels" and the "Gospel Writers;" with the "Archangels" coming out on top. The "Gospel Writers" included Ezra Friesner, Joe Schaufelberger, Evan Knittle, and Jill Gemmer. The "Archangels" included Natalie Fetzer, Kaden Thomas, Caroline Kopack and Rayana Thatcher.

Another traditional event during "Catholic Schools Week" is the Parent-Grandparent Luncheon. A special meal is prepared. After lunch guests can visit classrooms to see students' work and visit meet teachers. Mrs. Koening and Mrs. Fetzer prepared the lunch.
