Random Thoughts: football and more
SCOTT TRUXELL/independent editor
This week’s edition of Random Thoughts centers around a fast rivalry game, a streak that came to an end, 10-on-11 football, the Associated Press football poll, the Classic in the Country, an area magazine, Ohio State-Notre Dame tickets, Nebraska head coach Scott Frost and a non-sports question.
Fast game
The area’s fastest football game this week may be in Auglaize County, when St. Marys Memorial hosts Wapakoneta. Rivalry aside, both teams love to run the ball and both do it very well, which should keep the game moving.
Streak ends
All good things must come to an end and that was the case with Columbus Grove’s 23-game winning streak. The Bulldogs fell to Liberty-Benton 24-13 last Friday.
Columbus Grove has a chance to start a new winning streak this Friday but it won’t be easy, as Patrick Henry awaits on the schedule.
The Bulldogs do have another streak going – they’ve won 12 straight regular season games at home.
10-on-11
Vanlue High School has just 13 football players on the varsity roster.
The Wildcats faced Ridgedale last Friday night and due to injuries, had just 10 available players after halftime. They literally played most of the second half 10-on-11 and still made it a game.
Ridgedale intercepted a late pass to preserve a 38-36 win. No word yet if Vanlue will play McComb this Friday night.
Poll
If you’re wondering, the first Associated Press Ohio High School football poll of the season will be released next week. The A.P. generally waits until after Week No. 3 of the regular season to put out the first poll.
Classic in the Country
The schedule for the Classic in the Country has been released and Crestview is on the schedule. For those who doesn’t know, the Classic in the Country is considered the premier girls high school basketball showcases in Ohio.
It’s played at the Reese Center at Berlin-Hiland High School and the Lady Knights will face host school Hiland at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, January 14.

Black Swamp
I downloaded a copy of Black Swamp magazine last week.
It’s a football preview magazine that covers a number of schools around northwest Ohio. Van Wert and Crestview aren’t in it but I knew that when I made the purchase. That’s a well done publication and it’s obvious that a lot of time and effort went into it.
The people who put it together should be very proud of what they’ve done.
Ohio State-Notre Dame
If you want to go to Saturday’s season opener between Ohio State and Notre Dame and don’t have tickets, get ready to pony up.
A quick check of resale prices shows they’re going for anywhere between $330 and $1,850 each. Ouch.
Nebraska
After Saturday’s debacle against Northwestern, it’s going to take a lot for Scott Frost to keep his job. A lot, like a 10-2 season.
Non-sports question
Outside of pepperoni, what pizza topping is the best?
