VWHS golfers honored at 2011 banquet

The Van Wert Cougar golf team recently had its awards banquet over an outstanding meal at Willow Bend Country Club.  The 2011 Western Buckeye League runners-up had many highlights to celebrate and an outstanding future to ponder as well.

Cougars receiving certificates of participation included freshmen Alex Miller, Korbin Schalois, and Nathan Ireland. Sophomores receiving the same recognition include Elijah Wortman and Connor Mosier. All five of these golfers were able to participate in a number of junior varsity events and have shown a great deal of improvement.

Receiving a first-year varsity letter for the Cougars was freshman Brandon Hernandez and two sophomores: Adam Jurczyk, and Justin Price. Those three represent Van Wert’s No. 3, 6 and 7 golfers; if they are able to show improvement, the Cougars should have an excellent team in 2012.

Four individuals received their third year letters. They include juniors Jacob Brake and Tyler Turnwald, who were the No. 1 and 2 golfers, respectively, for Van Wert. Both had a number of all tournament team finishes throughout the year and Brake was able to qualify for district as an individual and earn honorable mention All-Northwest District.

The final two three-year letter winners were seniors Matt Cucciarre and Vince Moreland. These two also represented the Cougars as co-captains and were recognized with senior plaques.

Rounding out the awards were recently earned scholar-athlete awards. Half of the team was able to earn a 3.0 or better GPA the first nine weeks and were granted certificates. Those include Cucciarre, Moreland, Brake, Jurczyk, Ireland, and Hernandez.

Coach Hood thanked assistant coach Brad Doidge and the parents of all the golfers for a positive year in 2011.
