CELINA — The Van Wert varsity golf team traveled to Fox’s Den in Celina on Friday to compete alongside 21 other teams in an 18-hole invitational. The Cougars carded a score of 330, good enough for fourth place in the tourney.
Seniors Jake Brake and Tyler Turnwald led the Cougars with rounds of 75 and 79, respectively. Brake’s round put him in a four-man playoff for 2-5 places individually. After all was said and done, Caleb Acheson of Wapakoneta grabbed the second spot and Brake finished third individually.
“As a team the score of 330 was an improvement on our previous couple of outings,” Van Wert Coach Jeff Hood Said. “The WBL was well represented, with Elida finishing third as a team and Wapakoneta finishing fifth.
“We will have to be tougher in head-to-head competition if we want to make a run at a league title,” Coach Hood added.
In addition to Brake’s 75 and Turnwald’s 79, Cougar score were as follows: Brandon Hernandez 85, Luke Etzler 91, and Adam Jurczyk 95.
The Cougars have their first home match on Monday at 4:30 p.m. against Shawnee. The public is invited to watch.
