Cougar girls win Elida tennis tourney

ELIDA — The Van Wert girls’ tennis team won the Elida Tennis Invitational over the weekend, with the winning points coming when Cougar D Doubles team of Skylar Wood and Sarah Arend defeated Ashley Fay and Meredith Little of Elida for the championship of that division. The points earned allowed Van Wert to edge Elida 14-12 for the tourney title.

Van Wert singles player Claire Butler lost 6-3, 6-5 to Bluffton’s Emily Sprague in the singles championship match, while Paige Dunlap and Rachel Chen were the champions of the A Doubles division, defeating Erin Kesler and Haley Hurst of Elida 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match.

The Cougars’ B Doubles team of Sydney Dull and Ali Moreland lost to C’era Savage and Lauren Greeley of Elida in the first round of competition.

“I am so happy for this team and Sarah and Skylar, who came up big for this Van Wert team,” said Van Wert Coach Mitch Price following the match.

The Cougars next play Defiance in Western Buckeye League action today.
