Lancaster ekes out win over VW girls

The Van Wert Cougars got close, but couldn’t close it out at the end, losing to visiting Lancaster 40-37 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars trailed by one point, 9-8, at the end of the first quarter, and were down by four, 20-16, at the half. Van Wert cut the lead back to one, 26-25, in the third quarter with a 9-6 run but a 14-12 run in the final stanza by Lancaster was enough to eke out the three-point victory.
Erin Morrow led the Lady Cougars with 13 points, while Alexis Dowdy added 10 points for Van Wert. The Golden Gales were led by Audrie McRitchie’s 13 points, while Katie Miller added 12 points for Lancaster.
The Cougars are now 8-10 on the year.
Van Wert’s junior varsity team didn’t fare any better, losing to the Golden Gale JVs 33-22 in the first game of the afternoon. The Cougar JVs are now 3-16 on the year.
