VW swimmers qualify for district meet

AYERSVILLE — The Van Wert High School boys and girls swim teams traveled to Ayersville High School for the OHSAA Sectional Tournament. Out of 14 teams, the Cougar boys placed fourth, with the girls finishing in fifth place.

Teams competing at the Ayersville Sectional were Ayersville, Bloomdale Elmwood, Bowling Green, Celina, Coldwater, Defiance, Evergreen, Fort Recovery, Ottawa-Glandorf, Pemberville Eastwood, St. Henry, Toledo Christian, Van Wert and Whitehouse Anthony Wayne.

Eric Easley was the sectional champion in the 100-yard backstroke, while Kase Schalois won the 1-meter diving title, and Rebecca Johnson finished first in the 200-yard individual medley race.

Head Coach Kim Clifton noted that the Cougars had a strong presence at the sectional and there were many personal records set at the tournament.

The VWHS swim team will travel to Bowling Green State University on Friday, February 15, for the Division II OHSAA District Tournament. Those competing include Hannah Stemen, 100 yard backstroke; Easley, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM; Josh Overholt, 1-meter diving; Kase Schalois, 1 meter diving and, with Jacob Scheidt, Adam Jurczyk and Easley in the boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay, and Easley, Overholt, and Jurczyk in the boys’ 200-yard medley relay.
