Early voting began Tuesday in county

Early voting began on Tuesday and will continue through Friday, May 3.

Most of the races and issues are confined to the city of Van Wert and the Van Wert City School District.

The school district is seeking to make its 1-percent income tax issue a permanent one, instead of having to renew it every five years, while there are a number of Van Wert City Council races, including contests between Pete Weir and Ken Mengerink to replace Gary Corcoran as Council president.

Other Van Wert Council races include one for the Third Ward Council seat between first-term incumbent Stuart Jewett and Jerry Mazur, and a four-way contest for the Republican nomination for three at-large Council seats between Stan Agler, Brent Crone, Kirby Kelly and Jon Tomlinson.

In addition to the primary races, Democrat Jim Hamman will face off against Republican Steve Trittschuh in November for the Fourth Ward Council seat, while Democrat Jeff Agler will run against the three Republican nominees for Council’s three at-large seats.

In Delphos, Greg Etgen and Del Kemper are both seeking the Third Ward Council seat on that city council.

The Delphos Public Library also is seeking a renewal of its 0.6-mill, five-year levy, while a small portion of county voters will help decide a bond issue for Apollo Career Center.

Meanwhile, anyone who has not yet registered for the May primary must do so by 9 p.m. Monday, April 8, at the Board of Elections Office on East Main Street in Van Wert.
