Self-Reliance finalists named for 2013

Van Wert Service Club news

Ten area boys and girls have been selected for the 2013 R.K. Thompson Self Reliance Award, according to Van Wert Service Club’s Selection Committee.  The awards banquet is to be held on Tuesday, April 30.

The program provides cash awards to Van Wert County High School seniors who best exhibit the trait of self-reliance.  These awards are designed to seek out and honor the student who does the best with what he or she has.

This year’s boy finalists are Jordan Daniels, son of Ted and Janis Daniels; Nicklaus Germann, son of Eric and Karen Germann; Caleb Markward, son of Kenneth and Marie Markward; Nikolas Wolford, son of Bryan Wolford and Shannon Stegaman; and Isaac Young, son of Jay and Christina Young.

Daniels is a senior at Van Wert High School, where he is involved in the varsity football and varsity wrestling teams and is a youth member of the New World Tabernacle in Bluffton. He is currently employed at McDonald’s in Van Wert.

Germann is a senior at Lincolnview High School, where he is involved in Science Club, Beta Club, cross country and the Agents of Change organization.  He also attends Redeemer Lutheran Church Youth Group in Convoy and is also a Van Wert Historical Society junior curator.  He is currently employed at Schnipke Construction.

Markward is a senior at Van Wert High School, where he is involved in the varsity soccer and basketball teams, Concert Choir, French Club and is a member of the Western Buckeye League Sportsmanship Committee. He also attends Grace Bible Church and Lifehouse Youth Group and volunteers at Wee Care Learning Center in Van Wert.

Wolford is a senior at Van Wert High School, where he is involved in the varsity football, basketball and track and field teams, and is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Junior Achievement. He attends Lifehouse Church and volunteers for the American Red Cross and Van Wert Council on Aging.

Young is a senior at Vantage Career Center and Lincolnview High School, where he is part of the precision machining program, a Student Ambassador and a Junior Rotarian.  He is currently a manager at Westwood Car Wash in Van Wert.

This year’s girl finalists are Sarah Aurand, daughter of Guy Aurand and Cheryl Howell; Mesa Brummette, daughter of Paul Brummette and Michelle Gould; Kendall Dye, daughter of Douglas Dye and Johnna Robers; Briana Hanes, daughter of Christopher and Robin Dunning; and Haley McAbee, daughter of Bonnie McAbee and Michael McAbee.

Aurand is a senior at Van Wert High School, where she is involved in Beta Club, Globally Active People, band, varsity tennis, National Honor Society, Drama Club and is a Cougar mentor. She will attend Miami University in the fall and major in psychology.

Brummette is a senior at Van Wert High School, where she is involved in Beta Club, is a teacher’s assistant and student aide and attends Trinity United Methodist Church. She will be postponing her acceptance to Wright State University to join the United States National Guard.

Dye is a senior at Lincolnview High School, where she is involved in Beta Club, Science Club, National Honor Society and cheerleading. She will be attending Ball State University majoring in radiology.

Hanes is a senior at Van Wert High School, where she is involved in Beta Club, is president of the Spanish Club and volunteers with Blessings in a Backpack. She will be attending the University of Toledo to major in nursing.

McAbee is a senior at Lincolnview High School, where she is involved in soccer, track, choir, Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Science Club and is Senior Class president. She will be attending Ball State University majoring in radiology.
