DARE golf outing coming up in May

DARE program news

The Van Wert City/County DARE team would like to announce the upcoming 18th annual Golf Outing, to be held Saturday May 11, at Hickory Sticks Golf Club in Van Wert.

The fundraiser will start with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. In case of rain, the tournament will be played on Sunday, May 19, with the same start time. Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 62 will be sponsoring the outing again this year.

All of the proceeds from the tournament go back to Van Wert County community young people through helping to fund DARE schooling on the hazardous effects of drugs, alcohol, and violence. DARE also teaches important family values and other important aspects that children will need throughout their lives. DARE is a self-funded program, so it’s through fundraisers like the golf outing that the program is able to continue to help Van Wert County young people.

Hole sponsors are still needed for the golf outing at the cost of $100 per hole. Sponsors’ names will be put on a sign and then posted at one of the holes on the course.

The cost of participating in the tournament is $50 per person for four-person teams. This includes the 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch and door prizes. The tournament is limited to 36 teams and team rosters are available at Hickory Sticks Golf Club or by contacting either city DARE Officer Greg Blackmore at 419.238.2462 or Chief Deputy Keith Allen, the county DARE officer, at 419.239.3866.

This is the 13th consecutive year that Young’s Waste Service will be sponsoring the $10,000 Hole-In-One Contest, which takes place on Hole No. 4. Anyone who makes a hole in one on the other par three holes of the course will also win a bonus prize.

A raffle held at the end of the tournament will be for a chance to make a 50-foot putt and win $2,500. Young’s Waste Service has been supporting the DARE Program ever since it opened. Business owners Richard Riley, Rich Riley and Steve Hall said they believe in the DARE Program and what it does for the youth of the community.
